Affectionately known as the “Encarsia Aleurochitonis” it has no sting and it is unclear in how long the bug has been in the country due to its size (around 1mm), or whether current border control lapses may have attributed to its arrival.

Dr Andrew Polaszek, of the Natural History Museum in London, first spotted the wasp at his residence in Sevenoaks this summer.

The Encarsia Aleurochitonis breeds by laying eggs in white flies then devouring its host.

The wasp is known to live in mainland Europe, but may have been overlooked in the UK until now because of its size.

There is fortunately no risk of harm to human or pets.
